Pastor's Ponderings
Sometimes people are asked what they think the Bible is about and why it was written. Christians often have the most difficult time of this. The unbelievers and unchurched are willing to say honestly and simply that they don’t know. But the Christians first of all often seem to think that they should know. What is more, they seem to think that the Bible is all about the rules of life, an owner’s manual which prescribes the behaviors which God finds acceptable.
There are some who think otherwise. They “get it” and are in an obviously personal relationship with Christ. But the majority of people are in that crowd of Christianity which comes to church, attends some Sunday School and generally ignores the text the rest of the week. These people have a very difficult time getting their minds around the concept that the Bible is a love letter from God to God’s creation, that the purpose and content of the Bible is about reestablishing the relationship which was broken in the fall.
Many define sin as “naughtiness,” a breaking of the commandments, and losing sight of the fact that sin is a condition, a way we are as much as a deed we do. The deeds are simply the way our natures are coming out and showing up.
I am requiring our confirmation students to read their Bible every day as we study 13 Letters from Paul. I encourage everyone to be in the Word daily so that our spiritual journey will be strengthened.
Peace,
Pastor Judith

A Stewardship Devotion: GRATITUDE
Thomas Aquinas, the famous medieval theologian, created one of the greatest intellectual achievements of Western civilization in his Summa Theologiea
. It a massive work: thirty eight treatises, three thousand articles, ten thousand objections. Thomas tried to gather into one coherent whole all of truth. What an undertaking: anthropology, science, ethics, psychology, political science, all under God. On December 6, 1272, Thomas abruptly stopped his work. While celebrating Mass in the chapel of St. Thomas, he caught a glimpse of eternity and suddenly he knew that all his efforts to describe God fell so far short that he decided never to write again. When his secretary, Reginald tried to encourage him to do more writing, he said
“Reginald, I can do no more. Such things have been revealed to me that all I have written seems as so much straw.”
Even the greatest minds cannot fathom the greatness of God.
